Ray's Blues

Back in 2000 I wrote my first song in a rush of inspiration. I couldn't play the guitar, and I couldn't sing, but I could tap out a rhythm and make up the lyrics. That's what I did. This is a rough draft of the song Clay and I did. Sometime we'll produce it professionally, with drums, piano, guitars, etc. Of course I'd love to get it picked up by a country blues band! Hey, we've got lots of songs for sale ...

Ray's Blues

(©2000 Dan Lee Lyrics)

Ray blows in like the Spirit of the Night
while me and some buddies are watching the fight
he’s standing in the door with a big wide grin
sayin’ “What’s up daddy? I’m back again,”
Hey Ray! You remember Joe and Roy,
come in this house and pop a cold one boy.

When the fight comes down to the final decision
we plug in the amps and turn off the television and
I keep time while the spirit is descending
like a freight train rolling down a track neverending
Hey Ray, won’t you be your daddy’s boy.
When you come home son you fill this house with joy.

(chorus:)

Hey Ray! It’s so nice to have you home.
Say Ray! So nice to have you home,
we cannot rock and roll on the telephone.

Now I’m keeping time like a meditation master
while Ray calls God up on the Stratocaster
Joe’s playing bass he looks like an undertaker
and Roy's keeping time on a Guatamalan shaker,
Hey Ray! You sure can play these blues.
now the door blows open and mama comes drifting through.

(Female part)

There’s a spirit in the night and it rides on a train
that rolls on forever and forever back again,
I stand at the station with a cordless microphone
I’m taking off my body I’m dancing in my bones
Hey Ray, won’t you be your mama’s boy?
When you come home son you fill this house with joy.

(chorus)

We were rocking and rolling till half past five
when Joe and Roy went home to their wives,
mama said Ray I’m warming up some chicken
cause I know it makes you hungry when you do that kind of picking
Hey Ray! It sure makes life feel right,
when you visit me and Daddy on a funky Friday night.

Well goodnight Ray we’re going up to bed
cause our bodies and our spirits have been well fed
the crickets are a’singing and the moon is holding water
and mama’s been dreaming bout a little baby daughter,
Hey Ray! We sure do love you boy,
when you come home son you fill this house with joy

(chorus)

(repeat female part)

There’s a spirit in the night and it rides on a train
that rolls away forever and forever back again,
I stand at the station with a cordless microphone
I'm taking off my body and I’m dancing in my bones
Hey Ray! Won’t you be your mama’s boy?
When you come home son you fill this house with joy.

(chorus)
